We are finally in New England. About 50 miles in to the trip today, we entered Vermont. One of the first things I noticed were villages with white buildings with green shutters with oftentimes a church at the center of a common area. The fall foliage has become more colorful and the air has become crisp and dry. Today there was enough of a wind to blow leaves across the road as we were riding along. They would scatter as we would roll by and around the next curve or over the next hill. There are many roadside farm stands featuring pumpkins and colorful fall squash. To be here in the fall on a bike is cycling heaven.
For some reason my knees actually felt a little better today. I think less climbing and fewer miles really helped. There was not nearly as much standing pedaling which helped a lot. A few of the other riders are starting to feel the stress of day after day of 100 hilly miles. Hopefully the better day today will help out for tomorrow.
Another note on Pactour - some times people ask me who is riding with me. Probably 80 percent of the people here have been on Pactour trips in the past. Some have well over 10,000 miles with Pactour. On this trip, there are two riders from Australia, two from Canada and one from Germany. The rest are from California, Washington, Colorado, New York, Indiana, Massachusetts, Arizona and Wisconsin. On this trip there are a lot of lawyers, a couple of doctors and a lot of people that are either doing part time seasonal work or retired. Makes for a pretty diverse group.
Tomorrow we will visit another state, New Hampshire. We will ride northeast with the intent to position ourselves to ride the Kancamagus Highway across New Hampshire on Monday.
